Later consulting with friends and eliminating ones we didn't dearest, we narrowed it downwardly to 5 or 6 finalists, and eventually settled on Quora."[nine] Cheever went on to state, "The closest contest that [the proper name] Quora had was Quiver."[ix]
2010–2013: Early growth [edit]
In March 2010, Quora, Inc. was valued at $86 million.[6] Quora beginning became bachelor to the public on June 21, 2010, and was praised for its interface and for the quality of the answers written by its users, many of whom were recognized every bit experts in their fields.[6] Quora's user base increased quickly, and by late Dec 2010, the site was seeing spikes of visitors v to x times its usual load—so much that the website initially had difficulties handling the increased traffic.[ten] Until 2018, Quora did not evidence ads considering "...ads can often be negative for user experience. Nobody likes banner ads, ads from shady companies, or ads that are irrelevant to their needs."[three]
In June 2011, Quora redesigned the navigation and usability of its website.[xi] Co-founder Adam D'Angelo compared the redesigned Quora to Wikipedia, and stated that the changes to the website were made on the basis of what had worked and what had not when the website had experienced unprecedented growth six months earlier.[xi] In September 2012, co-founder Charlie Cheever stepped down every bit co-operator of the visitor, taking an advisory role.[12] The other co-founder, Adam D'Angelo, continued to maintain a high caste of command over the company.[3]
In Jan 2013, Quora launched a blogging platform allowing users to post non-answer content.[13] Quora launched a total-text search of questions and answers on its website on March xx, 2013,[fourteen] and extended the feature to mobile devices in late May 2013.[15] It also appear in May 2013 that usage metrics had tripled relative to the same fourth dimension in the prior year.[16] In November 2013, Quora introduced a feature called Stats to let all Quora users to come across summary and detailed statistics of how many people had viewed, upvoted, and shared their questions and answers.[17] [18] TechCrunch reported that, although Quora had no immediate plans for monetization, they believed that search ads would likely be their eventual source of revenue.[19]
2014–2017: Continued growth and new features [edit]
Google Search popularity for Quora, 2012–2017

2018–2019: Further growth and information breach [edit]
In September 2018, Quora reported that information technology was receiving 300 meg unique visitors every month.[3] [36] Despite its large number of registered users, Quora did non possess the same level of mainstream cultural dominance as sites like Twitter, which, at the fourth dimension, had roughly 326 million registered users.[three] [37] This may have been because a large number of registered users on the site did not use information technology regularly and many did not even know they had accounts since they had either created them unknowingly through other social media sites linked to Quora or created them years previously and forgotten nearly them.[37] [38] Quora uses popups and interstitials to force users to login or register before they tin come across more than of the content, similar to a metered paywall.[39]
In December 2018, Quora announced that approximately 100 1000000 user accounts were afflicted past a data breach.[37] [twoscore] The hacked information included users' names, email addresses, encrypted passwords, data from social networks like Facebook and Twitter if people had chosen to link them to their Quora accounts, questions they had asked, and answers they had written.[xl] Adam D'Angelo stated, "The overwhelming majority of the content accessed was already public on Quora, just the compromise of account and other private data is serious."[40]Compromised information could too allow hackers to log into a Quora user's connected social media accounts, via admission tokens. A class action lawsuit, case number 5:18-cv-07597-BLF, was filed in the Northern District of California, on behalf of named plaintiffs in New Bailiwick of jersey and Colorado by Capstone Law and Franklin D. Azar & Associates, P.C.[41] [42]
Past May 2019, Quora was valued at $2 billion as a company and information technology was finalizing a $60 meg investment round, which was led past Valor Equity Partners, a private disinterestedness house with ties to Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX.[3] In spite of this, the site still showed very few ads compared to other sites of its kind and the visitor was still struggling to turn a profit, having simply fabricated $20 million in revenue in 2018.[3] Several investors passed on the opportunity to invest in Quora, citing the company's "poor track tape of actually making money."[3] Schleifer characterized the disparity betwixt Quora'due south valuation as a company and its bodily profits as a result of "the loftier valuation for virtually everything these days in the tech sector."[3]
In December 2019, Quora announced that information technology would open its get-go international engineering role in Vancouver, which would bargain with automobile learning and other applied science functions.[43] That same month, Quora launched its Arabic, Gujarati, Hebrew, Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu versions.[44]

In addition, the platform launched a subscription service called Quora+ which allows subscribers to pay a $5 monthly fee or a $50 annual subscription to access content that whatever creator chooses to put backside a paywall.[47] [48]

The Real Proper name Policy was rescinded on April 19, 2021.[46]
As of 2011, the Quora community included answers by some well-known people such as Jimmy Wales, Richard A. Muller, Clayton C. Anderson, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Adrián Lamo,[52] [53] also as some current and one-time professional athletic personalities, scientists, and other experts in their fields.
Quora allows users to create user profiles with a proper noun and photo, and access to edit count and other site employ statistics. In Baronial 2012, blogger Ivan Kirigin pointed out that acquaintances and followers could see his activity, including which questions he had looked at.[54] In response, Quora stopped showing question views in feeds subsequently that month.[55] By default, Quora exposes its users' profiles to search engines. Users can disable this feature.[56]

Well-nigh 150 writers were chosen each yr. Meridian writers were invited to occasional exclusive events and received gifts such as branded clothing items and books. The visitor believed that by cultivating a grouping of core users who were particularly invested in the site, a positive feedback loop of user engagement would be created.[61]
After not selecting whatsoever 2019 or 2020 English language-language Acme Writers, the program was officially retired in April 2021 but will go on in other languages.[62]
Reception [edit]
Reviews [edit]
Quora was reviewed extensively by the media in 2010.[63] [64] [65] Quora was hacked in 2018 leading to loss of data of users to hackers.[66] According to Robert Scoble, Quora succeeded in combining attributes of Twitter and Facebook.[67] Subsequently, in 2011, Scoble criticized Quora for being a "horrid service for blogging" and, although a decent question and answer website, non essentially better than alternatives.[68]
Quora was highly criticized for removing question details in Baronial 2017. According to some users, the removal of question details limited the ability to submit personal questions and questions requiring code excerpts, multimedia, or complication of any sort that could not fit into the length limit for a URL.[69] [seventy] According to an official product update announcement, the removal of question details was made to emphasize approved questions.[71]
The moderation organisation of Quora has been a frequently criticized topic. Criticisms mostly swivel around the website's ineffective, inconsistent and opaque approach to moderation from the perspective of its users: apparent non-violations are automatically flagged by the website'due south algorithm (such as pasting a web URL to cite a source)[72] while posts that are either counter-factual with no backing sources, or answers and comments that are highly inflammatory, adversarial or harassing appear to stay despite reporting.[73] The website's responses to moderation appeals are seen by the userbase as impersonal and automatic, leaving many to wonder how much of the website'southward moderation is performed past human staff and how much is automated.[72] [74] [75] [76]
The inconsistency of Quora moderation has been blamed for the proliferation of harmful prejudices on the website. In 2014, in addition to beingness privately harassed, female users noted a ubiquity of pointed, sexist questions about women with more conspicuously sexist question details whereas the same kinds of questions rephrased to be near men were chop-chop taken downwardly. One user was discipline of a sexually defamatory post containing a photograph of her which was simply taken down by moderation after the incident was publicized online.[77] Racism and farthermost far right viewpoints have been noted to be ubiquitous on Quora despite its policies. [78] [79] Some Quora users feel there has been an increase of anti-Semitism on the website, pointing to a community for Holocaust denial.[80] Others point to moderation decisions that seem biased against Palestinian posters, including the banning of Rima Najjar, equally well as banning the Palestinian civilisation, history and politics space "Palestine Today" three times from 2017 to Feb 2020. [81]
Use in influence operations [edit]
In 2018, the People'southward Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, reported on successful results from coordinated use of Quora in strange propaganda campaigns.[82]
Lawsuit [edit]
On Jan 1, 2020, a retired Palestinian American professor, Rima Najjar Merriman, filed a lawsuit confronting Quora at the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Her lawsuit declared that she had been wrongfully banned from Quora for posting hate speech for calling some other posters "Zionists" and for "calling out" other writers.[83] [84] On March 23, 2020, Merriman filed for a voluntary dismissal of her lawsuit.[85]
